February 5th, 2014 -
The Citadel head coach Mike Houston announced on Wednesday the addition of 17 newcomers representing eight different states to the Bulldog football family for the 2014 season.

"I want to thank our coaching staff for the outstanding job that they have done here over the past three weeks to put together a very solid signing class for this first year," said Houston.

Houston, who was named the 24th head coach in Citadel history on Jan. 9, landed six in-state athletes, including defensive back Shy Phillips of Hartsville. Phillips, who recently participated in the Shrine Bowl, also plans to play for the Bulldog baseball team.

"It takes a special athlete to play at a high level in two sports, but I think Phillips is that kind of talent and I look forward to him playing with us this fall and then for our outstanding baseball team next spring," said Houston.

Two players hail from Florida, Georgia and North Carolina and one from Alabama, Maryland, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Virginia.

Eight recruits are being brought in on offense including quarterbacks Shon Belton and Jalen Lampkin, while nine defensive players will join the fold.

Current freshman wide receiver Jorian Jordan and Derrick Freeland (OL) attended Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte while freshman offensive lineman Isaiah Pinson played alongside Sydney Martin at Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C.
