CHARLESTON, SC (WSCC) - Forecasters with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA, have updated the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season forecast. NOAA is now calling for a below average season.
The government's weather arm is expecting fewer hurricanes than first predicted back in May. The new forecast calls for 9 to 13 named storms, including four to seven hurricanes and between zero and two major hurricanes. The new forecast includes the four named storms we've already had this season.
A typical hurricane season usually produces around 12 named storms, with six becoming hurricanes and three growing to major hurricane strength.
The update says there is now a 60 percent chance the season will see a below average number of storms.
