Lowcountry officials release reopening plans f/ schools, government offices

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Lowcountry officials are working to assess damage and announce their plans to reopen schools and government offices.

Gov. Henry McMaster lifted a mandatory evacuation order for Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester Counties as of noon on Saturday.

Charleston County

Charleston County offices will reopen Monday on a normal schedule. This includes Charleston County Public Library Branches, The Bees Ferry Landfill and Charleston County Convenience Centers, and the downtown courthouse.

Bond Court will be held Sunday at 9 a.m. and Monday at 9 a.m.

Charleston County schools will resume a normal schedule on Monday, pending the governor's approval, according to a post on the school district's Facebook page. All school buses and bus routes are planning to run as scheduled on Monday. The Office of Nutrition Services will be prepared to provide meals at all campuses. Curbside recycling will resume Monday on a normal schedule. If your recycling was missed this week, it will be picked up on your normally scheduled day. 

"School and district administrators are aware that families may experience hardships as a result of Hurricane Florence’s impact, and will work with those families on an individual basis that will not be back on Monday," the post states.

Charleston International Airport reopened its airfield as of noon on Saturday. Airport officials urge passengers to check their flight status with their airlines.

The Charleston County Parking Garages located at 85 Queen and 90 Cumberland Street will resume charging the normal hourly rate at 6 p.m. Sunday. If you do not want to be charged please remove your vehicle by that time.

The Citizen’s Information Line remains staffed until 5 p.m. Saturday, and will be open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday. The number is 843-746-3900.

Trident Technical College activities scheduled after 3 p.m. on Sunday will be held as scheduled. Classes will resume on a normal schedule Monday.

Berkeley County 

The county's emergency operations moved to OPCON 3 as of noon. Crews will continue to be on standby for any potential impacts from Tropical Storm Florence.

Citizens in evacuation shelters will start returning home Saturday. If residents need any assistance, please call the citizen information line 843-719-4800.

Berkeley County Schools will reopen on normal schedules Monday pending the governor's approval. Schools and offices will operate on our regular schedule. School bus pick up will operate on a normal schedule and BCSD employees are to report at their regular time to receive students. The scheduled late-in for high schools Wednesday has been canceled. School menus will be adjusted back by three days to account r food received and prepare for delivery of food items this week. Additionally, Child Nutrition staff will work to have gas restored to schools and will adjust menus accordingly.

Before school and after school care programs will continue normal operations. Athletics and extracurricular activities will resume; however, please check with your school athletic departments regarding any changes to athletic schedules.

The Berkeley County Courthouse will reopen Monday. All court cases will be rescheduled. Summary Court cases from last week will be rescheduled and parties will receive new court information by mail.

Landfills and convenience centers will reopen Monday on normal operating hours.

The Berkeley County Airport will reopen Sunday at 8 a.m.

Dorchester County

The Dorchester County Emergency Operations Center is at Operating Condition (OPCON) 3. The EOC has a limited activation.

All Dorchester County Convenience Sites will open at 10 a.m. on Monday.

Dorchester County School Districts 2 and 4 will open Monday on a regular schedule.

The school district posted the following on its Facebook page saying, "We realize some families and staff may experience hardships, especially those that evacuated. Those cases will be handled on an individual basis. Please continue to be cautious and safe."

The Special Primary Runoff Election for Dorchester County Council District 1, that was scheduled for Sept. 11 has been postponed. The Dorchester County Election Commission is working with the Governor’s office to reschedule the election for Tuesday

Colleton County

Colleton County Schools will resume their normal schedules on Monday. All school and bus routes are planning to run as scheduled. The early dismissal day scheduled for Thursday will now become a regular school day.

Williamsburg County

Williamsburg County School District employees will report to work on Monday at 8:30 a.m. and at their regularly scheduled time on Tuesday.

Students will return Tuesday morning on a two-hour delay because of road conditions.

Georgetown County

The Georgetown County School District and the District Office will reopen Tuesday. GCSD 240-day employees and essential staff who are notified by their immediate supervisor will return on Monday, September 17 to prepare for the reopening. 

Orangeburg County 

All OCAB and OCAB Head Start Centers will reopen for staff and children Monday at their regularly scheduled time.
