CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The week began with warmer-than-normal temperatures but the weekend is expected to usher in the coldest air of winter.
Monday’s high of 71 degrees was 11 degrees above the average high for mid-January, Live 5 First Alert Meteorologist Bill Walsh said. But people who like their winters chilly will have two reasons to celebrate this week thanks to a pair of arctic blasts.
The first comes when a cold front pushes offshore Tuesday night dropping the overnight low into the low-20s. The high on Wednesday will only reach into the mid-40s, with another below-30 overnight low, Walsh said.
“We rebound on Thursday and then a second shot of arctic air colder than Wednesday moves into the weekend,” he said.
Saturday night’s low will be about 21 degrees, but Walsh said inland areas could drop into the upper teens. Sunday’s low will be about 23.
“This is ‘let the pipes drip a little bit’-type of weather,” he said.
Live 5 First Alert Meteorologist Stephanie Sine says on both nights, the wind chill temperatures — which describes how cold it will feel — will be in the mid-to-low teens.
By the middle of next week, the forecast calls for a high back around 70.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - A quick moving disturbance ahead of a cold front will bring an increased chance of rain as we head through our Tuesday. With cloudy skies expected today, temperatures will only slowly climb to near 60° by lunch time with temperatures cooling into the 50s with showers this afternoon. The aforementioned cold front will push offshore this evening bringing an end to the chance of rain and will begin to bring cooler air into the Lowcountry. The sky will slowly clear overnight with temperatures falling into the upper 20s far inland and low to mid 30s along the coast. Expect a sunny and cold Wednesday with highs only in the 40s. We’ll trend warmer Thursday and Friday in advance of our next cold front. Highs will be in the low 60s Thursday and Friday. The cold front may bring one or two showers Friday morning but most of Friday should wind up dry. Much colder weather will move in for the weekend with highs in the mid 40s and lows in the upper 20s Saturday morning and low 20s on average Sunday morning. We may see a few areas drop into the teens on Sunday morning with wind chills between 10-20° first thing. Warmer weather will return to the area early next week.
