Charleston Fall Race Guide 2018

Summer is officially coming to an end in the Lowcountry which means fall is right around the corner! As the kiddos get settled back into school and the weather finally begins to die down, now is the perfect time to lay out your 2018 Fall & Winter plans. 

This time of year sparks lots of excitement in my mind as I know that football season is upon us as well as all the fun activities and holidays that come with the cooler weather. Charleston is a wonderful place to be anytime of the year especially now! The greater Charleston area has multiple fun fall fitness festivities planned for the 2018 season that you, your family, and friends do not want to miss out on! 

Below we have provided a list of all the upcoming 5K's, 10K's, marathons, triathlons, and more in Charleston and surrounding areas for the next few months! Details and links to sign up are provided as well, sign up with your friends and family to support a great cause and have a blast all while bettering your health & fitness! 

Labor Day 5K Run & Walk

The Labor Day 5K Run and Walk is the final race to the Daniel Island Happy Hour 5K 2018 Series! The race will take place Friday, September 3rd at 8:30 AM on Daniel Island near the Volvo Car Stadium and is open to walkers and runners of all ages. 

A post-race party will be held at a local Daniel Island restaurant at the end of the race, and by completing the race your first beer is paid for so why not join in on the fun!

2018 Light from Light Hope for Haiti 5K

The 3rd Annual Hope for Haiti 5K is scheduled this year for Saturday, September 8th at 9 AM. The race will begin at the Chick-Fil-A North Mount Pleasant and consist of a run throughout the beautiful Oakland Plantation. 

Online registration is open until September 7th.  Children 3 and under are free. Price for children (4 -12) includes race registration, T-shirt and participation ribbon. Price for students and adults includes race registration, T-shirt, and finisher medal. Be sure to register online by September 4th to guarantee a race t-shirt! 

Proceeds from this event go to Light from Light, a 501(c)3 non-profit whose mission is to strengthen the foundations of progress in Haitian communities, empowering them for long-lasting change.

9/11 Hero's Run 5K & 1 Mile 

The 9/11 Hero's Run unites communities internationally on behalf of the Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) with the goal to never forget the sacrifices of the heroes of September 11th. Currently the 9/11 Hero's run has been established in more than 50 cities around the world! 

Each year runners and walkers of all ages come together to support the TMF on or around 9/11 and is run 100% solely on volunteers. This years Charleston 9/11 Hero's Run is set for Saturday, September 8th at 9 AM.

The Dirt Dash Marathon, 1/2 Marathon, 10K & 5K

This years 9th Annual Dirt Dash is held at Johns Island County Park on Saturday, September 8th at 7:30 AM! The Dirt Dash has various race options: marathon, 1/2 marathon, 10K & 5K so don't miss out on the fun and pick the best option for you! 

Friday before the race, enjoy packet pickup at Johns Island County Park (from 4 PM until 6:30 PM). If you would like to camp out for the evening, there is a designated section for camping. Johns Island County Park charges a fee for RV and tent camping so be sure to pay for that during checkout!

R(un) for One 5K & Fun Run 

Join in on The R(un) for One Saturday, September 8th at 8 AM. This years race will take place at the Laurel Hill County Park in Mount Pleasant, SC. 

The R(un) for One 5k and Fun Run supports (un)adopted®, Lifeline Children’s Services and international orphan care ministry. One-hundred percent of the proceeds from the R(un) for One go to (un)adopted work in Colombia, Peru, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Costa Rica, China, Haiti, Togo, Liberia, Uganda, Ethiopia, Ukraine and Pakistan.

The Commonhouse Mile and Pacer Dash

As apart of the 2018 Charleston Beer Week, Commonhouse Aleworks and The Park Circle Pacers invite you to come be a part of their inaugural 1 mile race! This years race is located in Park Circle in North Charleston and the race will be held on Tuesday, September 11th at 6:15 PM. 

The Commonhouse Mile is great fun for the whole family. They have a stroller friendly course and a FREE kids 400 meter dash. The race will start and finish at Commonhouse Aleworks invite friends and family to join in and relax after and enjoy a cold beer!

FT5K Color Run 

The FT5K Color Run is hosted by Charleston Miracle who raises money for the campaign for the new MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. The FT5K Color Run is being held on Saturday, September 15 at 8:30 AM at Laurel Hill County Park in Mount Pleasant

The color run is open to ANYONE and EVERYONE who would like to join in on this fun, interactive experience! Participants will get the opportunity to be covered with paint, listen to live music, partake in community bonding, and raise money for the kids.

Kiawah Island Triathlon

The Kiawah Trialthlon is a USAT-sanctioned intermediate distance competition. The racce features a .7-mile swim, 25.1-mile bike and 6.1-mile run around breathtaking Kiawah Island! The race is scheduled for Sunday, September 16th at 7:30 AM starting from Night Heron Park on Kiawah Island.

25th Annual Komen Lowcountry Race for the Cure

This year marks the Lowcountry's 25th Komen Race for the Cure! The race is scheduled for Saturday, September 22nd at 7 AM. The race is taking place at the North Charleston Riverfront Park

This important annual event raises significant funds for the breast cancer movement, 100% of the net proceeds are allocated to finding a cure! In addition to raising funds for the breast cancer movement, our event also increases awareness, celebrates breast cancer survivors and honors those we have lost to their battle with the disease.

Hammer it Out Hustle 5K and Fun Run

The Hammer It Out Hustle race is a family-focused event that raises money for MUSC Children's Health. This years run is scheduled for Saturday, September 22nd at 9 AM. The run is located at the West Ashley Outboard Motor Club

Enjoy some of the most iconic low country scenery of the Charleston area as you run beside the Stono River on the West Ashley Greenway. If the running doesn't take your breath away, the views will!

Carolina Children's Charity 5K

This year will mark the 15th Annual Carolina Children's 5k Partial Trail Run / Family Fun Walk! Join in on the fun on Saturday, September 22nd at 9 AM. The race is located at the Palmetto Islands County Park in Mount Pleasant. 

5K Partial Trail Run starts at 9 a.m. - Family Fun Walk will start immediately following.

Lowcountry Teal Diva 5K

Join in on the Lowcountrys 5K supporting Ovarian and Gynecologic (K)ancers. Teal Diva is hosting a 5K Run/Walk event on Saturday, September 29th at 9:30 AM! The 5K will take place at the Wannamaker Park in North Charleston. 

Teal Diva is a non-profit organization whose mission is to celebrate life, honor memories, empower women, educate the community and fund diagnostic research for ovarian and gynecologic {k}ancers.

Citadel Brigadier Foundation 5K

The Citadel Brigadier Foundation raises money for athletic scholarships at the Citadel. This years 5K BEACH Run/ Walk will be held on Saturday, September 29 at 7:30 AM. The run will begin on the BEACH in front of The Citadel Beach House located Isle of Palms and will end there as well. The Kid’s Run will be on the BEACH starting at 8:30 AM.

South Carolina Aquarium Turtle Trek 5K 

Run for the turtles! The South Carolina Aquarium Turtle Trek is a 5K SUNSET beach run and kids’ fun run. This years race will take place Saturday, September 29 at 5 PM on Isle of Palms.

Proceeds from the Turtle Trek support the Sea Turtle Care Center™ and the Aquarium’s conservation initiatives. To date, we have rehabilitated and released more than 250 sea turtles back into their natural habitats.

Race Day Schedule:  Isle of Palms County Park

  • 3:30-5 PM: Packet pickup
  • 4-5 PM: Beach sweep and warm-up
  • 5 PM: Kids’ fun run
  • 5:30 PM: 5K beach run

Isle of Palms Connector Run 10K & 5K

Don't miss the Isle of Palms Connector Run Saturday, October 6th starting at 8 AM. There is a 5K & 10K race option, all proceeds from the race support a Non-profit for the healing and prevention of child abuse in Charleston.

Race Day Schedule:

  • 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM: Racers, runners, walkers, volunteers and fans arrive on the Isle of Palms for the race.
  • 6:30 AM: Race Day late registration and packet pick up opens at the Public Safety Building – 30 J.C. Long Boulevard, Isle of Palms, SC
  • 7:00 AM: The Isle of Palms Connector closes to all traffic. Use the Sullivan’s Island and Ben Sawyer Bridge to access the race.
  • 8:00 AM: RACE START is at the intersection of J.C. Long Boulevard and Palm Boulevard.
  • 9:00 AM: Post Race Celebration begins! Join us for  live music, beer garden, awards ceremony, sponsor tents and kid’s entertainment.

Avondale 5K Run & Walk 

The Avondale 5K was created in 2010 to help fund The Charles Webb Center. The CWC is a developmental day care operated by the Disabilities Board of Charleston County, serving children with special needs from age 6 weeks to 10 years old.

This years race will be on Saturday, October 13 at 8 AM. The race will start and finish at Triangle Char + Bar off Savannah Highway.

James Island Connector Run 10K, 5K & Duathalon

The Charleston James Island Connector Run has one of the most scenic race routes in the Southeast and one of the most challenging courses in the Lowcountry! Overlooking the beautiful Ashley River and the historic downtown peninsula of Charleston, this 10K Run, 5K Run and Duathalon goes across the James Island Connector! 

This years race will be held on Saturday, October 27th at 8:30 AM.

Proceeds from the Charleston James Island Connector Run benefit the Gavalas Kolanko Foundation, a local charity that awards annual scholarships to students with physical disabilities making “Education Within Reach” for South Carolina undergraduates pursuing a college education despite physical limitations.

2018 LUNG FORCE Run/Walk

Join us as we run and walk together to raise awareness and funds to defeat lung cancer and raise our voices for lung health. After the Run/Walk, enjoy a FREE breakfast on the Folly Beach Fishing pier—the best breakfast on the edge of America! All finishers will receive medals, and the top male and female runners will each receive a LUNG FORCE surf board! 

This years LUNG FORCE run/walk will be on Saturday, November 3rd at 9 AM

Holiday Festival of Lights Fun Run & Walk

Join in for a two-mile non-competitive fun run and walk and special preview of the Holiday Festival of Lights at James Island County Park. After reaching the finish line, participants are invited to enjoy all that the festival has to offer.

This years Festival of Lights Fun Run & Walk will be on November 7th & 8th! The event begins at 6:30 PM. Please plan to arrive early; the park will close to all traffic at 6:30 PM and will not reopen until approximately 8:30 PM.

Sweet Tea Half Marathon & 10K

Enjoy 13.1 or 6.2 miles of the Sweet Life in Summerville on Saturday, November 10 at 7 AM.

Both races began in historic downtown Summerville and take you on the Sawmill Branch Trail and through some of Summerville's lovely neighborhoods before finishing back in historic downtown. While running, you will enjoy live entertainment as well as water stations.

Race proceeds will benefit the Summerville Fire and Police benevolent fund and Dorchester County EMS.

Charleston 2018 Chili 5K

Navigate through the majestic moss-draped trails of Laurel Hill County Park during the 2018 Chili 5K. Post-race party includes hot chili and cold beer! The 5K will take place on Saturday, November 17th at 9 AM

Preregistration ends Thursday, November 15. Race day registration is available from 7:30-8:30 AM for $34.

Purple Haze 5K & Dog Dash

Have you ever completed a 5K with your furry friend!? Try it out!

The Purple Haze 5K Run/Walk is scheduled for Saturday, November 17th at 9 AM and is a dog friendly 5K Run/Walk! This is a 5K run to support PAALS- Palmetto Animal Assisted Life Services. Race will feature a 5K and 5K with dog option. This race will be start and finish on Daniel Island near the dog Park at Governors Park.

41st Annual Turkey Day Run 

The annual Turkey Day Run & Gobble Wobble is a holiday tradition for Charleston natives and travelers alike. One of the largest 5K's in Charleston is scheduled this year for Thursday, November 22nd kicking off at 9 AM at Marion Square in Downtown Charleston. The course takes participants through historic downtown Charleston and Battery before returning to Marion Square for a post-race party that includes free food and beverages (beer provided for those 21+ years) as well as live music and awards ceremony. A Children’s Fun Run and activities ensure that this is a fun event for any age.

The Annual Kiawah Island Marathon

This year will mark the 41st Annual Kiawah Island Golf Resort Marathon, the race starts and finishes in beautiful East Beach Village. There are full and half marathon options, throughout the course you'll witness beautiful views of maritime forests, marshes, and grand homes within the Kiawah Island community! This years Kiawah Island Marathon will be on Saturday, December 8th starting at 8 AM.

The Kiawah Island Golf Resort Marathon and Half Marathon courses are both Certified and Sanctioned by the USA Track & Field Organization and the Marathon is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.

Bulldog Breakway Christmas 5K

Come join in for a 5K run during the holiday season! Hosted by the Citadel The Bulldog Breakway Christmas 5K will be held this year on Saturday, December 8th at 8 AM. Parking will be available near the track on The Citadel's campus.

  • Where: Start and Finish at Willson Field on The Citadel’s Campus.
  • Course: Certified 5K – 1 lap on Citadel’s Campus, 1 lap around Hampton Park, and back around Citadel’s campus.

28th Annual Reindeer Run 5K

Presented by Half-Moon Outfitters the 28th Annual Reindeer Run 5K will be held Saturday, December 8th at 9 AM

The Reindeer Run is a family-oriented, pet-friendly 5K Run & Walk through the lower peninsula of downtown Charleston. The event has grown significantly over the years; from only a few hundred participants to record attendance of over 3,500 runners! Throughout the history of the event, the Charitable Society of Charleston (CSC) has donated over $1,000,000 to MUSC Children’s Hospital. In 2017 alone, the Charitable Society of Charleston donated $50,000 to the organization. The funds generated from the Reindeer Run are helping the campaign to build the new MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital that is set to open its doors in 2019.

COSTUME CONTEST: The costume contest is a crowd favorite and we are bringing it back again for 2018! Judging begins around 10:00 AM behind the stage.  Our categories include, Adult Individual, Child Individual, Group and Dog.  We award the top 3 from each category with lots of great prizes and gift cards from restaurants and attractions around the Charleston area.  Come dressed to win!

Cocoa Cup 5K

Please join us at the fifth annual Cocoa Cup 5K on Saturday, December 15th at 9:30 AM in Summerville! Whether you're running the 5K or the 1M kid's fun run, you’ll enjoy getting out on Nexton’s scenic course design with 2,000 other running fanatics. 

The 5K racers will receive a fluffy Nike hoodie commemorating the annual event. Plus, a free cocoa cup and other goodies.

Race Day Schedule:

  • 7:00 AM: Race Day Registration and packet pickup
  • 9:00 AM: One-mile Kid's fun run – Ages 12 and under, registration is mandatory
  • 9:30 AM: 5K Start, followed by holiday festivities, hot cocoa, and the awards ceremony
