Parking expansion project begins at Charleston International Airport

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The first phase of the Charleston International Airport parking expansion project has officially begun.

The cell phone waiting and remote/seasonal parking lots are the first to get a facelift which will include more parking to ease the burden when construction begins on the new parking deck in 2019.

The new garage will eventually have 3,000 spaces.

"We knew long ago we needed more parking to accommodate our customers. That has become even more evident recently. Our deck and surface lot fill routinely now. This has caused us to open our remote parking more often and well before the busiest travel times during Thanksgiving and Christmas," Executive director and CEO of the Charleston County Aviation Authority Paul Campbell said.

The parking expansion is part of a master plan of projects addressing the airport's growth over the next five to 10 years. The construction on the cell phone and remote lots are expected to be finished before Thanksgiving.

"We saw nearly 4 million passengers in 2017 and expect even more in 2018," Aviation Authority Deputy Director Hernan Pena Jr. said. "Continued steady enplanement growth means our airport needs to be ready to accommodate that growth."
