JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - If the final reading of a proposed James Island ordinance passes on Thursday night, it would prohibit people from loitering outside restaurants, sleeping in parks and make it against the law for people to sleep in their cars or campers in parking lots.
The ordinance would then go into effect immediately and also includes public restrooms and schools.
Under the ordinance, anyone who is suspected of violating it would have a chance to explain their reason for being at the location to a police officer before any arrest is made. It also states that no one will be convicted if law enforcement doesn't allow them to explain themselves, or if their original explanation is found to be true at trial.
Anyone convicted could face up to 30 days in jail and pay a fine. Each day the violation continues would count as a separate offense.
The James Island town council is set to vote at 7 p.m. Thursday night.
