CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Lowcountry warming shelters have announced they will be open over the next few nights as colder temperatures enter the area.
Goose Creek
Goose Creek United Methodist Church will open as a warming shelter for Berkeley County residents starting at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21.
The facility will take in individuals until 10 p.m. that night. Breakfast and lunch will be served.
Mount Pleasant
The Hibben Hospitality Shelter at 690 Coleman Boulevard in Mount Pleasant will also be open Thursday and Friday nights from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. the next morning. No visitors can enter after 11 p.m. unless advanced arrangements have been made or they are brought in by an official.
Any guest arriving early must wait outside until the hospitality crew gives them permission to enter. All bags will be examined. Prohibited items will be removed and returned upon departure.
Overnight guests will be offered a warm place to sleep plus an evening meal and breakfast. Showers are available with towels, soap, and shampoo furnished. Clothes may also be available.
The Hibben bus pickup schedule will be as follows:
- 6:55 p.m. East Bay Street at Huger Street (across from Taco Boy)
- 7:05 p.m. Main Library on Calhoun Street
- 7:10 p.m. Marion Square on King Street
- 7:15 p.m.“Navigation” Center, 529 Meeting Street
- 7:45 pm* Back at Hibben UMC
The buses will return guests the next morning to where they were picked up.
St. George
The Bethel AME Church on Memorial Boulevard in St. George will be accepting people each day from Thursday through Saturday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The shelter will then close at 8 a.m. each morning. Hot meals will also be given out.
North Charleston
The Aldersgate United Methodist Church has announced its shelter will be open Thursday and Friday night.
The Warming Shelter is located at 1444 Remount Road. Registration for the warming shelter will last between 7 and 9 p.m. unless previously arranged and the shelter closes at 7 a.m. the following morning.
Aldersgate United Methodist Church says the Winter Warming Shelter will provide a hot shower, warm clothes, toiletries, overnight lodging and an optional devotion.
Those looking for public transportation to the shelter can board Carta Bus Route 13 and ask for the Aldersgate warming shelter.
Pets are not permitted at this warming shelter.
