CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Charleston County schools could bring back more than 1,500 students, currently on a wait list, in person by Nov. 11.
During Monday’s board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Gerrita Postlewait said the district’s goal is to have more than 25,000 students learning in person five days a week by the second week of November. That’s about 60-percent of the district’s students.
Right now, the school district has more than 23,000 students learning in person every day and 19,000 learning virtually. More than 1,500 of those learning from home are still wanting to return in-person but remain on that wait list.
Earlier in the meeting, the school board approved five e-Learning days for the second half of the year, so all students will learn from home one day a month from January to May. The approved dates are Jan. 15, Feb. 22, March 15, April 30, and May 17.
It gives teachers more time to plan and talk with parents.
The school board also voted to officially give themselves a raise bringing their pay from $25 per meeting to $800 per month. The board chair will make 900 per month.
