Country Star legend Charley Pride dies at 86 of COVID-19 complications

2018 CMA Music Festival - Day 2

Pride was described as the first black superstar of country music, earning 30 of his hit songs on the top of the country music charts throughout the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Before Pride was an American singer and guitarist, he was also a talented athlete and played professional baseball as a two time all-star pitcher for the Memphis Red Sox before skyrocketing his music career.

Pride headed to Nashville after signing with RCA Records and topped country charts with hits including — "I Can't Believe That You've Stopped Loving Me," "I'm Just Me" and "Where Do I Put Her Memory," among others — in his distinct, welcoming baritone voice. His greatest musical success came in the early to mid-1970s, when he was the best-selling performer for RCA Records since Elvis Presley. The longtime legend died in Dallas, Texas, due to complications from COVID-19, according to a news release from his publicist, Jeremy Westby.
